About

Summary

The Indiana University STEM Summer Scholars Institute (STEM SSI) is an 8-week undergraduate research program designed to give motivated undergraduate students hands-on experience in graduate-level research. We welcome applicants from IU, IUPUI, and Minority Serving Institution (MSI) partner institutions around the United States who are seriously considering joining a Ph.D. graduate program after completing their undergraduate degree. Students from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Scholars are hosted on two core Indiana University campuses.

In addition to laboratory research, the program features:

  • Competitive Stipend, On-Campus Housing, and Included Travel
  • Tier 1 research with distinguished faculty (including Dr. Bradshaw and the BLMC)
  • Weekly research seminars and roundtable discussions
  • Academic and career-planning workshops
  • GRE preparation & Graduate School application  preparation
  • Mock interviews for graduate school
  • Saturday Excursions
  • Closing symposia where the students present their research in oral presentations and a poster session

Students receive on-campus housing accomodation, meals, and a competitive stipend.

Objectives & Goals

The STEM SSI direct laboratory experience. Students spend a majority of their time learning research techniques in the laboratory, attending lab meetings, interacting with members of other labs, and otherwise conducting themselves just as if they were in graduate school. Each student is mentored by a faculty mentor and solving real research problems in a research laboratory.

Launched in March 2007, the purpose of the STEM SSI program is to:

  • facilitate substantive STEM research opportunities for MSI and IU students
  • provide increased access for MSI students to IU graduate programs in the STEM disciplines
  • encourage collaborative research between MSI and IU faculty in the STEM disciplines
  • enrich the academic opportunities of all the institutions through “visiting scholars” programs, faculty and student exchanges and a faculty research institute.
